Syfy Orders Pilot For New ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Spinoff Following Young Adama

In the Battlestar Galactica spin-off movie, Razor, we got a peek at William Adama (Edward James Olmos) as a much younger soldier.

A short while back, Syfy decided to go a little further with this, planning to create a small online series called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, which would tell more stories of young Adama and his many trials and tribulations during the great Cylon war. But now things have changed.

Syfy was so fond of the script that they received from Michael Taylor, that they’ve now instead decided to film the online series as an entire pilot episode for what just might become a new spin-off TV series. The plan now is to begin production in early 2011 for a debut at some point in late ’11 to possibly early 2012.

The pilot and possible show is said to take place 20 years after the events of Caprica, Syfy’s current-running spin-off series which tells the story of the creation of the Cylon race, and about 40 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica itself. Nico Cortez, who played the younger Adama character in Razor, is not yet locked for the new pilot, but it is of course hoped that he can return. It’s hard to think of any reason an unknown actor wouldn’t sprint and jump at such an opportunity, so it would be assumed that he’ll do just that.

As for Caprica, much has been said as to whether or not the show would be given a second season. It’s a wonderful show, but fans aren’t flocking to it quite like they did for Galactica. This is a shame, but also understandable. While I love Caprica and very much hope it continues for at least one more season, it’s so very hard to replace the love fans had for BSG and especially the characters and actors on that show.

Scribe Michael Taylor is no newcomer to the realms of science fiction. Not only did he write and produce Razor and episodes of BSG and Caprica, but he also has written and produced episodes of Stephen King’s Dead Zone, as well as written episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

As for master of the Galactica realms, Ronald D. Moore, he has no part in this new pilot at the moment, being busy with other projects. It is hoped that if it does turn into a new series, he will be able to come in and help out. His partner through it all, David Eick, is working on this as executive producer along with Taylor.

It was also noted that this new pilot is by no means an attempt at replacing Caprica so they can cancel it. The decision on a second season for that show is expected by November 15th, so we can only wait and hope for good news there.

I’ll take all of the spin-offs I can get here and can’t wait to see how this looks, but still, it doesn’t quench my thirst for more of Olmos and the real Adama, as well as all of the other characters we all miss so dearly.
