Twisted, dark, perfect: Mortal Kombat gets a new viral ad

Twisted, dark, perfect: Mortal Kombat gets a new viral ad: "

Readers are wondering if we know something about it, people are Twittering about it, and everyone is wondering what the hell it means. The 'it' in question? A seemingly random preview for a new Mortal Kombat... something. A film? A video game? The timing is a little too perfect—E3 is around a week away—and this certainly has people talking about the franchise.

Take a look, but fair warning: this gets graphic in places.

This is a much darker take on the Mortal Kombat mythos than we're used to, and while it may seem like a fan-made project, both the actors and the production values point to something professionally done. That's Michael Jai White as Jax, and Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade. While neither of those two are big stars, it's not like they're actors you can just call and ask for a favor.

Whatever this is, and it could be anything from viral marketing to a new game to a director's demo reel, it is pretty damn impressive and gets us all sorts of excited about the possibility of a bigger project done in this style. Sure, the cheese is still a little thick, but whoever created this understands the characters, and the one fight scene is very watchable.

Let the speculation begin!
