Dead Space 2 isn't due to hit store shelves until early next year, but EA has announced that a downloadable prequel will be launching before year-end on both Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network. Dubbed Dead Space Ignition, it looks like the game will offer up a very different experience compared to its retail counterpart.
EA describes the game as a "comic adventure" that lets players experience the events leading up to Dead Space 2. It will feature a "choose your own adventure" style narrative, multiple endings, and three different arcade-style hacking minigames. Players can also unlock additional content, such as new suits, that can be used in the sequel. The story is being penned by Antony Johnston, who previously wrote the comic book adaptations of the first game in the series.
And it looks like Ignition won't be the last Dead Space spin-off we'll be seeing, as EA has other game extensions in the works in addition to Ignition and the previously announced PSN version of Dead Space Extraction.
"Dead Space Ignition is the first of many exciting game extensions we have planned for the launch of Dead Space 2," executive producer Steve Papoutsis said. "The interactive comic-style game will give Dead Space fans a unique perspective on the events leading up to Dead Space 2, but will also introduce the storyline to a brand-new audience of gamers."
Ignition is set to hit both XBLA and PSN this fall.
